Bedford girls sail by Londonderry, stay undefeated

BEDFORD — The Bedford High School girls' basketball team combined 15 points from Bri Purcell and a suffocating second half defense to defeat Londonderry, 50-36, on Bedford Wednesday.

Casey Evans had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Lancers.

The win keeps the Bulldogs perfect at 15-0 while Londonderry falls to 13-3. The Lancers have lost their last two games.

Londonderry was still without star guard Aliza Simpson who remains sidelined with a hairline fracture.

It was a physical game from the start. Perhaps too physical for Londonderry coach John Fagula.

"We needed the refs to call the contact early on," said Fagula. "Unfortunately they let a lot go."

The Lancers used their size advantage early to force Bedford into taking bad shots. They led 14-9 after one.

But Bedford kept up its press defense giving Lancer guards Jaclyn Luckhardt and Kelsey Coffey little room to operate.

Getting points off turnovers allowed Bedford to cut the Lancer lead to 25-22 at the half.

But the Bulldogs didn't let up and the turnovers mounted in the second half. What was a three-point lead for Londonderry became a six-point deficit after 3.

"Against a good club you can't give them extra opportunities," Fagula said.

Fagula said Simpson might see action Friday at Trinity. She was held out of Wednesday's game mostly because of a lack of practice time.

"As far as a win/loss this game was irrelevant" said Fagula. "But if the man upstairs is willing we'll see them again with Aliza."

Bedford coach Sue Thomas feels the same way.

"I hope we see them again next time with Aliza because that will change things," Thomas said
