Snow stops train, delays Nashua traffic

NASHUA — Downtown traffic was delayed on Tuesday after a Pan Am train became stuck at a Main Street crossing during heavy snowfall.
Deputy Fire Chief Brian Rhodes of Nashua Fire Rescue said it wasn’t clear whether the freight train derailed or partially derailed, but the unit was blocking Main Street around 3:30 p.m. According to Rhodes, the train may have been having some difficulties at a prior stop near the East Hollis Street crossing before it was completely stuck at the Main Street and Canal Street intersection in the center of downtown.
The train typically comes to a complete stop before crossing Main Street, said Rhodes, adding it may have had trouble getting its traction to fully halt because of the weather. He stressed that there was no collision or injuries reported from the incident, although traffic was slowed because one of the lanes of travel was blocked.
The heavy snowfall at the time also stalled traffic, added Rhodes. Nashua Fire Rescue was not called to assist at the scene, but police were requested to help direct traffic while the train issue was fixed, he said.
