Pelham police seek driver who hit bicyclist, left scene Sunday
PELHAM – Police are seeking a hit-and-run driver who struck a bicycle rider on Mammouth Road Sunday night.
The bike rider, identified as Stacy Jones, 50, of Lowell, Mass., was returning home from Manchester when he was struck by the side view mirror of a car that was also headed southbound.
“We believe it is either a 2007 or newer GMC Acadia or a Saturn Outlook,” said Pelham Police Sgt. Anne Periello. “It was definitely missing a passenger side mirror.”
The SUV involved was described as being off-white, and because the mirror that was knocked off in the collision was heated, there may be wires dangling from the area of the car where it had been mounted.
The sound of the impact of the car's mirror against Jones was loud enough for a nearby resident to hear while working in her barn. Police said a motorist heading in the opposite direction turned around and tried to follow the vehicle that hit Jones, but the hit-and-run driver eluded him.
While Jones was riding with traffic and was adorned with reflectors, the bike did not have a light, police said.
The road in the area of the accident had very little shoulder area because of snow drifts, but police said Jones was riding right at the fog line at roadside.
He apparently sustained an arm injury in the incident.
