HANCOCK — From the mountains of snow to the smooth thick ice, conditions were perfect Saturday for a frosty winter frolic in Hancock.

Between the cardboard box sled races on Norway Hill, the broomball game on Norway Pond and the s'mores campfire on the banks of the pond, Norway Pond was the place to be Saturday during Hancock's annual Winter Frolic, said volunteer Roberta LaPlante said.

"It's too nice a day to be indoors," LaPlante said.

With plenty of snow from Wednesday's storm and blue skies, turnout for the event was phenomenal, said Cindy Hixson a member of the Hancock Recreation Committee, which holds the winter event.

The Recreation Committee had several games planned for children, but didn't actually hold them because the children were so busy sledding, making a giant snow fort and playing broomball, Hixson said, adding people from neighboring towns like Harrisville also turned out for the event.

"Twenty-six box sleds — we haven't had that turnout in years," Hixson said. "And the conditions are perfect. A little icy, but that makes the sleds go faster and the kids love that. And the broomball has always been a big hit, and the kids are getting more involved with that. So it's been a great, great turnout this year."

Keegan Harris, 10, of Hancock won the box sled race.

Last year, rain had made the pond's ice bumpy, which hindered broomball on the pond.

"The ice is perfect this year. All the way out there, it's 2-feet thick," Hixson said, pointing to the center of the pond.

The Winter Frolic also included hot chocolate in the church vestry, a food alley in the town horse sheds and karaoke in the town common gazebo.
