Daniel Dion scored 13 points, including a late go-ahead 3-pointer, to help the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team post a 73-69 victory over Stony Brook on Saturday in Stony Brook, N.Y.The victory raised UNH's record to 6-17 overall and 4-6 in America East. Stony Brook dropped to 17-8 overall and 9-2 in the conference.
UNH trailed 69-68 until Dion hit a 3-pointer with 14.1 seconds remaining. Jordon Bronner made two free throws with 5.1 seconds left to secure the win. The victory ended Stony Brook's 23-game home winning streak against America East opponents.
Bronner led UNH with 16 points. The Wildcats received 15 points and 11 rebounds from Chris Pelcher, and 14 points from Jaleen Smith.
Western Conn. 72, Plymouth State 70: At Danbury, Conn., Plymouth State point guard Petey Skevas scored a game-high 20 points, but the Panthers late rally fell short. Western Connecticut led by as many as 23 points in the second half. Plymouth's State received 12 points from Berlin's Curtis Arsenault and 10 from Dover's Alex Burt.
Daniel Webster 80, Newbury 63: At Brookline, Mass., Daniel Webster's Ryan Gauthier, a sophomore guard from Nashua, made seven of his 12 3-point attempts and tossed in a game-high 25-points to lead the Eagles.
Maine Maritime 87, NEC 75: At Henniker, 17-point performances from Malchi Davis and Dezron Wilson weren't enough for New England College, as Maine Maritime won its first North Atlantic Conference game of the season. NEC's Robin Wilson collected 14 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Husson 71, Colby-Sawyer 60: At New London, Colby-Sawyer's Mike Dias tossed in 14 points and finished the game with six rebounds, but Husson shot 59 percent from the field and remained at the top of the North Atlantic Conference standings. Peter Donato added 10 points and six rebounds for the Chargers.
Merrimack 73, SNHU 65: At North Andover, Mass., sophomore Erin Doherty's career-high 27 points was the highlight for Southern New Hampshire. Junior Brooke Springfield (Jaffrey) finished with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists in the loss.
Becker 70, Daniel Webster 67: At Leicester, Mass., Manchester's Ashley Giampetruzzi finished with a game-high 24 points and 14 rebounds, but Daniel Webster came up short on the road. Daniel Webster also received a double-double from Manchester's Katherine Johnson, who came off the bench to score 12 points and collect 10 rebounds.
Maine Maritime 54, NEC 52: At Henniker, Kari Jones made a 3-pointer with six seconds remaining to hand Maine Maritime the victory. New England College received a game-high 15 points from Taylor Burgess, who also pulled down six rebounds.
Wheaton 65, WPI 60: At Norton, Mass., Hampstead's Laura Pierce, a junior guard, scored a career-high 16 points and also contributed a game-high seven assists to help Wheaton extend its winning streak to four games. Wheaton's Rebecca Arnone, a sophomore guard from Litchfield, added 14 points.
Colby-Sawyer 56, Husson 49: At New London, junior Kelsey Cahill tossed in a season-high 19 points to highlight Colby-Sawyer's victory, Cahill added nine rebounds, four steals and three blocks in the victory.
Boston University 7, UNH 4: At Boston, Cassandra Vilgrain, Arielle O'Neill, Nicole Gifford and Jenna Lascelle scored for UNH, but the Wildcats lost to BU for the third time this season. UNH's Sara Carlson and Jessica Hitchcock each recorded two assists.
Castleton State 4, Plymouth State 0: At Rutland, Vt., Plymouth State goalie Ali Ponte posted her fourth 40-save game of the season, but took the loss as the Panthers were outshot 44-19.
UNH defeats Yale: At New Haven, Conn., Kayla Gray equaled a season high by scoring a meet-leading 9.875 on balance beam, and UNH claimed wins on all four events en route to a 195.400-188.700 victory over Yale. UNH earned its second consecutive victory to improve to 4-3 overall; Yale slipped to 1-7, which includes two losses to UNH.
