Men's Hockey: Vermont completes weekend sweep of UNH

The University of New Hampshire men's hockey team had a weekend to forget, capped by Saturday night's 2-1 loss against Vermont.

The Wildcats, battling for position in Hockey East and looking to make a case for an NCAA tournament berth, were swept by the Catamounts at the Whittemore Center. Vermont defeated UNH 5-2 Friday night before finishing off the sweep with Saturday night's win.

UNH is now 16-15-1 overall and 8-8-0 in Hockey East.

Vermont (15-9-3, 7-7-0 Hockey East), which won the first game of the weekend series with a 5-2 victory at the Whittemore Center Friday night, jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals early in the second period Saturday.

After a scoreless first period, Pete Massar opened the scoring for Vermont at 3:45 of the second, with assists from Yvan Pattyn and Jonathan Turk. Vermont's Mario Puskarich made it 2-0 less than three minutes later, with assists from Brendan Bradley and Chris McCarthy.

UNH ended its scoring drought when Nick Sorkin scored a power-play goal to make it 2-1 at 11:40 of the second. Kevin Goumas and Brett Pesce had assists on Sorkin's goal.

That would finish the scoring on the night, however, as UNH couldn't net the equalizer against Vermont goaltender Mike Santaguida, who made 28 saves in the win.

UNH outshot Vermont 14-5 in the third period and pulled goaltender Casey DeSmith for the final 1:24 of the game but was unable to beat Santaguida.

DeSmith, who made 24 saves Friday night before being replaced with 10 minutes remaining in the game, made 28 saves Saturday night for the Wildcats.

UNH returns to action on Friday night at Boston University in the first game of a weekend series against the Terriers.
