NH College Roundup: UNH women win again

Sophomore guard Elizabeth Belanger registered a team-high 16 points and seven rebounds, leading the University of New Hampshire to a 72-53 rout of Binghamton in an America East game on Sunday at Lundholm Gym in Durham.

The Wildcats’ third straight win raised their record to 13-8 overall, 7-1 in conference play. Binghamton fell to 4-18, 1-8.

Nashua’s Kelsey Hogan added 10 points and six assists for UNH, which trailed 30-29 at halftime. But UNH posted runs of 15-4 and 12-1 in the second half to win going away.

Men’s basketball

Dartmouth 78, Princeton 69, OT: The last time Dartmouth's men's basketball team won both home games of the Penn-Princeton weekend, Paul Cormier was the Big Green coach — in his first stint 25 years ago.

Of course, Cormier is the current Dartmouth coach, and his charges had quite a weekend at Leede Arena in Hanover. On the heels of a comeback win over Penn on Friday night, the Big Green beat Princeton 78-69, in overtime, on Saturday night. Senior Tyler Melville and John Golden produced season highs with 21 and 19 points, respectively, as Dartmouth climbed back to .500 (9-2, 2-2 in the Ivy League) and ended an eight-game losing streak against the Tigers (12-5, 0-3 in the Ivies).

Neither team led by more than six during regulation. In overtime, Dartmouth scored 11 of its 15 points at the foul line. For the game, Dartmouth was 23 of 26 from the line.

Men’s hockey

Dartmouth 5, Princeton 3: Jesse Beamish scored a pair of goals as the Big Green built a 4-0 lead and held on to beat the Tigers before a sellout crowd of 4,500 at Thompson Arena on Saturday night. Goalie James Kruger picked up his first career win, stopping 17 shots, as Dartmouth improved to a 3-11-1 in the ECAC, 4-15-3 overall. Princeton is 3-11-0 and 4-17-0 overall. Dartmouth hits the road for the next two weekends.
St. Anselm 2, Norwich 1: Joey Agliato scored the game-winning goal halfway through the third period, and goalie Nick Dries made a career-high 48 saves as the Hawks upset No. 5 Norwich at Sullivan Arena on Saturday afternoon. St. Anselm improved to 7-9-4, 4-7-4 in ECAC East play. The Cadets, coached by former UNH player Mike McShane, dropped to 14-5-2, 10-3-1 in ECAC East.

The Hawks host Southern New Hampshire on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Sullivan Arena.
SNHU 5, Assumption 1: Jay Sylvia scored twice for the Penmen on Saturday at the Ice Den. SNHU improved to 13-6-1, 5-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Zach Lubinski of Hudson also scored for the Penmen, who have won five of six.
Plymouth State 6, Westfield State 2: Sophomore Andrew Wigg notched two goals and two assists to lift PSU on Saturday in Westfield, Mass. The Panthers scored four third-period goals to break a 2-2 tie and improve to 9-10 overall, 7-5 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. Gordon Ceasar made 20 saves for PSU, while Westfield State’s Eddie Davey was forced to make 42.

Women’s hockey

Maine 3, UNH 1: Wildcat goal Ashley Wilkes made 23 saves in the losing cause. The Wildcats dropped to 5-16-5, 3-10-3 in Hockey East. Heather Kashman scored UNH’s goal.St. Anselm 4, Nichols 1: Saturday in Burrillville, R.I., Alex Kazmer scored a goal and added an assist, leading the Hawks to the ECAC East win. St. Anselm improved to 17-3-0, 10-2-0 in conference play.
