Londonderry's Starlin Ortiz lands the long jump.

Bishop Guertin girls take an Indoor Track Championship thriller

HANOVER — Molly McCabe of Bishop Guertin of Nashua overtook Bedford's Hannah Shawver on the final leg of the 4x200 relay to win the relay for the Cardinals and clinch a 12th straight Division I Indoor Track Championship on Sunday at Leverone Field House at Dartmouth College.

Aside from the dramatic finish by the BG girls, Shannon Murdock of Exeter broke the state record in the 1,500 meters.

And the Bishop Guertin girls broke the Division I record in the 4x800 relay. McCabe is part of that relay team, as well.

Going into the final girls' event, BG had just a .33-point lead over Bedford and Winnacunnet.

Whichever of those three teams came out on top of the 4x200 relay would win the state title.

Bedford went into the final leg with a big lead and appeared to be on the way to upsetting the Cardinals and ending their run of championships.

But McCabe ran like she had a rocket on her back and overtook Shawver in the final turn.

"I don't think I was thinking of anything but passing her," said McCabe about her run. "We knew if we won that we'd win the state so it got in our minds to do whatever it takes."

One of the first events of the day was the girls' 4x800 relay, where the BG girls set a Divison I record of 9:43.88. McCabe was also the anchor of that team.

There was far less drama on the boys side as Pinkerton Academy won its third boys title in a row, going away.

Pinkerton led the meet the entire way and wound up with 87 points. Bedford was second with 44 and Londonderry finished with 42. The Astros' Zach Cicio was a double-winner (55 and 300 dash), as was Londonderry's Starlin Ortiz (high jump, long jump).
