Hostage-taker Eisenberg gets more time for his second escape try

MANCHESTER — Leeland Eisenberg, 52, who gained notoriety and a prison term for walking into the Hillary Clinton Presidential campaign office in Rochester wearing a fake explosives vest and holding workers hostage for a time in 2007, pleaded guilty in Hillsborough County Superior Court North to an April 2013 escape charge.

It was his second escape conviction. In May 2010, Eisenberg was sentenced to 3½ to seven years after a judge ruled he had violated his probation by cutting off a pair of monitoring anklets and testing positive for cocaine and alcohol. He was approved for work release in October 2012 and transferred to the Calumet House transitional housing unit Jan. 31, 2013.

Eisenberg would have been eligible for parole in August, but he walked away from the Calumet House April 7 and was found the next day at the Manchester Community Resource Center on Lake Avenue.

Assistant Hillsborough County Attorney Kenneth Perkes said Eisenberg, who has spoken openly about mental health issues, had stopped taking his medications and was ready to plead guilty from the start.

Because of the escape, Eisenberg was returned to the state prison to serve another 15 months of his earlier sentence, Perkes said. Eisenberg was sentenced on the new escape conviction to 3½ to seven years, all suspended for two years of good behavior, to be followed by two years of probation.
