GOFFSTOWN — The Goffstown Public Library celebrated the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Horse with activities and story time.

Chinese music played in the children's room Friday, as kids and their parents were invited to eat oranges and fortune cookies, make lanterns, decorate cut-out horses and practice using chopsticks by picking up cotton balls.

Several boys and girls turned out for the event, including Phoebe Demers, 3, who wore a pink embroidered garment — a gift from her grandmother, Catherine Fogg, a Manchester doctor who recently served in Cambodia as part of the Mercy Ship mission with the U.S. Navy and the Latter-day Saints charities.

Patti Penick, director of youth services, read several books, including "My First Chinese New Year," "Happy, Happy New Year," and "The Dancing Dragon," as the group sat silently listening.

Penick said she wore red to symbolize good luck.
