Woman gets prison for Jaffrey crash that killed boyfriend

KEENE — A woman who plead guilty to negligent homicide for causing a crash in Jaffrey last year that killed her passenger was sentenced in Cheshire County Superior Court Tuesday to serve two-and-a-half to five years in state prison.

Nichole L. Oates, 35, lived in Rindge at the time of the crash, but now resides in Troy.

Last February, she was indicted on six charges — three felony counts of negligent homicide, two felony counts of aggravated driving while intoxicated and one count of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon.
The multiple charges alleged Oates caused the death of her boyfriend, Daniel Peard, 34, of Jaffrey, on Jan. 5, 2013, by driving while intoxicated, speeding and “drifting” in her 2012 Ford F-150 Raptor pickup truck along Fitzwilliam Road in Jaffrey, thereby causing the crash.
According to court documents, the Ford veered off the road and into an embankment where it struck a boulder, which caused it to spin out of control and hit a tree.

Cheshire County Superior Court Judge John Kissinger also ordered Oates to have no contact with Peard’s family.
Her driver’s license was revoked, and she will not be allowed to apply for a driver’s license for the next seven years.

In the event she is issued another driver’s license, her sentencing order says the state would mandate she use a breath alcohol ignition interlock device for a period of five years.
