Man charged with assaulting Mason police chief held on bail

A judge ordered Russell N. Monbleau III held on $50,000 cash bail at his arraignment Thursday on charges of assaulting the Mason police chief during a traffic stop last week.

Monbleau, 38, a former Milford resident who now lives in Fitchburg, Mass., allegedly struck Mason Police Chief Barry G. Hutchins, fought with him on the ground and threw a heavy metal chair at him when Hutchins attempted to arrest him on a charge of crack cocaine possession Jan. 24.

Monbleau ran into the woods after the alleged attack near 80 Brookline Rd.

Hutchins stopped the vehicle for a motor vehicle violation, Sgt. Kevin Maxwell said Thursday. The chief asked Monbleau to step outside the vehicle when Monbleau appeared to be hiding something in his pocket, Maxwell added. It was then that Monbleau allegedly attacked him. The incident remains under investigation.

Massachusetts authorities arrested Monbleau at his Fitchburg home Jan. 28. He waived extradition and returned to New Hampshire to answer to the Mason charges in 9th Circuit Court District Division in Merrimack.

Monbleau could not enter a plea in district court on the felony counts of reckless conduct and second-degree assault.

He pleaded not guilty to two counts of simple assault and resisting arrest — all misdemeanors.

A preliminary hearing will be held in 9th Circuit District Court in Milford Feb. 10 .

Chief Hutchins received medical treatment for injuries suffered in the attack. He has not yet resumed full-time patrol duties, Maxwell said.

Danielle Dickstein, 34, of Amherst allegedly drove the car in which Monbleau was traveling Jan. 24. She was arrested at the scene on charges of crack cocaine and marijuana possession, police said. She is scheduled to be arraigned on those charges in Milford on March 10.
