Filmmaker, antiwar activist Ayers to debate at Dartmouth

HANOVER — Filmmaker and author Dinesh D’Souza will debate ’60s-era antiwar activist Bill Ayres at Dartmouth College Thursday despite his recent arrest.

D’Souza, who graduated from Dartmouth College in 1983, was indicted last week on charges that he violated campaign finance laws and used straw donors to funnel as much as $20,000 to an unsucessful U.S. Senate candidate.

The Dartmouth Review and Dartmouth College Republicans are sponsoring the event, which is being promoted as “the ultimate fight between left and right.”

D’Souza had been a member of The Dartmouth Review in 1982, said Stuart A. Allan, president of the review.
The debate is the first in a series of semi-annual Dartmouth-set debates The Dartmouth Review started based on the Munk Debates held in Canada, Allan said.

Headlined as “What’s So Great About America?” the debate shares its title with D’Souza’s 2002 bestseller, which argues for a renewed patriotism in the face of radical internal and external threats to America.
The debate will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Spaulding Auditorium at Dartmouth College.
