HAVERHILL — A measurable earthquake registering 2.1 in intensity was heard and felt in the town of Haverhill for several seconds early Tuesday morning.

 

 

Emergency management officials in a recorded phone message sent to community residents two hours after the quake was recorded at 6:32 a.m. said it was centered between North Haverhill and the town's business district of Woodsville, and occurred six miles below ground.

 

 

Although the quake was loud and rattled windows in homes and businesses, officials said in the message there were no reports of injuries or damage.

 

 

"People described it as an explosion or a jolt," Haverhill Town Manager Glenn English said. "We had no reports of damage."

 

 

Ken Blaisdell, a mechanic at Fadden Automotive in North Haverhill, said he felt the effects at his home nearby.

 

 

"I thought it was a hard wind or an explosion, but when it shook, I knew it was an earthquake; my whole house shook."

 

 

Blaisdell said the effects Tuesday were not as strong as those from an earthquake he experienced locally in the early-1980s during a stronger quake centered in Canada near the Quebec-Ontario provincial line.

 

 

Paul Tetreault, who's been a barber in Woodsville for 54 years, also lives in North Haverhill, but said he was not aware there had been an earthquake.

 

 

"I was sleeping; I slept through it. Of course, I wouldn't have heard it, but I should've felt the vibration," said Tetreault, who has run Paul's Barbershop since 1962 after working previously in a shop with another barber. He said he's hard of hearing.

 

 

"I have hearing aids," he said. "I can't even hear it when the phone rings. Sometimes that's good."
