Souhegan girls run past Pembroke

AMHERST — Souhegan went on an 11-0 second-quarter run and rode it to a 45-32 win over Pembroke Academy Monday night.

The Sabers improved to 8-1 while Pembroke fell to 7-3.

Souhegan was led by Devon Hickey with 11 points. Camden Formby-Lavertu had 10 and Mickenzie Larivee added 9.

Hannah Seidner led the Spartans with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Marissa Kibbe had eight.

The Sabers led 11-8 after one quarter, but in the second Souhegan increased its defensive pressure on Pembroke in the backcourt. The result: turnovers converted into points for Souhegan and the big run.

“We missed too many shots, had too many turnovers and let them get out into transition,” said Pembroke coach Joshua Goldstein.

Mike Heaney, in his first year as Souhegan’s girls coach, said that the transition game is only just starting to click for them.

Pembroke went on a 5-0 run to start the third quarter to get it to 22-17, but the Sabers settled down and got back their 10-point lead after three, 29-19.

The Spartans got it to within five again at 31-26 thanks to a Seidner 3-pointer, but Souhegan’s Jaime King responded with a pair of 3’s of her own. “After I hit the second 3, I knew we had control of the game,” said King. Her points set off a 14-7 Souhegan run to seal the game.

At 8-1, Souhegan is knocking on the door of the elite teams in Division II. “This program was 7-11 last year,” said Heaney. “But credit the kids and how hard they’ve worked.”
