A MOOSE was rescued Sunday after it became trapped when ice gave way as it crossed the Warner River. Peter Ladd/Warner Fire and Rescue

WARNER — Firefighters rescued a large moose that fell through the ice on the Warner River Sunday afternoon.

Warner Fire and Rescue was called about 4 p.m. about the moose, which was trapped in the freezing cold water after falling through the ice.

The animal was unable to extricate itself for what appeared to be an extended period of time during near-zero-degree weather, according to the rescue workers.

Department members, wearing water-rescue suits and under the direction of Chief Ed Raymond and a state Fish and Game conservation officer, successfully freed the moose in about 20 minutes, assisting it to the bank of the river.
