House kills genetically engineered food-labeling bill

CONCORD &#-; The House voted 185-162 Wednesday to kill a bill requiring genetically modified foods to be labeled in New Hampshire.House Bill 660 would have required that any genetically engineered food be labeled as such.Labeling supporters said many citizens want to know whether their food is genetically altered and have a right to that information, which manufacturers want to block. They said the state should take the lead to pressure the federal government to take action on the problem. But opponents argued the market will eventually decide the question, and the state should not be stepping into what is the responsibility of the federal government.
