Coins for charity Manchester meter surprise

Come on, Manchester. Is this the best you can do?

Last year the city installed a series of “Spare Change Meters” — parking meters converted to charity donation stations. The colorful meters inform passers-by that inserted coins will be given to New Horizons, Manchester’s premier homeless shelter and soup kitchen. Sadly, few have given.

.
New Horizons expected to raise about $22,000 a year, based on success stories from other cities. Instead, the people of Manchester donated only about $100 a month before the winter set in, and only about half that since then.
..
We know Manchester to be a giving community. These meters are a good way to donate your spare change to a local charity and know that it all goes to help the homeless. Giving in this way provides the homeless with food and shelter while discouraging panhandling and preventing the money from being used for drugs. It is a win-win scenario — but only if you give.
