Brunet wins pageant; beau, snowboarder Lago, falls short
Seacoast resident Bridget Brunet, 25, will compete for the title of Miss USA as Miss New Hampshire USA 2014.
Brunet, 25, was crowned Miss New Hampshire USA in Manchester Sunday night after two days of competition.
Brunet earned a bachelor's degree in marketing and business administration at Salve Regina University, Newport, R.I., and is an event and wedding planner.
While attending college, she interned in the events department of a luxury hotel in Newport, according to her biography. She has worked for a local flower farm for five years, growing blooms and creating floral arrangements for events and retail. Brunet has also dabbled in the catering world, working as a personal chef for professional athletes on the road.
While Brunet was winning the Miss New Hampshire USA crown, her longtime boyfriend, snowboarder Scotty Lago, fell short of the scores needed to put him on the four-man halfpipe Olympic Snowboarding Team nominated by the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association Sunday afternoon at the conclusion of the Sprint U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix in Mammoth Falls, Calif.
Lago, 26, of Seabrook, who earned a bronze medal during the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, finished 13th in the fifth and final grand prix competition. The U.S. Olympic Committee will formally name the 2014 U.S. Olympic Team for the Sochi games on Jan. 27.
Participants in the Miss USA pageants compete in swimsuit, evening gown and interview categories. There is no talent competition.
The Miss USA Pageant is owned by Donald Trump and NBC Universal. The winner of the Miss USA competition will represent the United States at the Miss Universe Pageant.
If she wins the national pageant in June, Brunet will become the first New Hampshire titleholder to wear the Miss USA crown. The best a N.H. woman has done in the Miss USA crown was in 2000, when another young woman named Bridget came close. Bridget Vezina was first runner-up in 2000.
The national competition will be held in July in Las Vegas and televised live on NBC.
At the same event, Mikaela Seamans was named Miss New Hampshire Teen USA 2014. Seamans, who entered as Miss Keene, was the third runnerup in the Miss New Hampshire Teen USA competition in 2013. She also competed in evening gown, swimsuit/fitness and interview categories.
The national competition for Miss Teen USA 2014 will be in July in the Bahamas.
