Stevens High renovation continues in Claremont

CLAREMONT — Architects for Stevens High School are expected to have design plans for an auditorium stage before the renovation committee in the next two weeks, David Putnam, chairman of the committee, said Thursday.

Original plans for the high school renovation included razing the old wooden stage and replacing it with a raised platform only a few inches high.

Students and faculty, though, opposed that plan and said they would prefer to save the traditional stage.
"We're exploring all the options for redesigning it so it will meet ADA compliance and fire safety codes and still work as a performing stage," Putnam said.

The first phase of the $12.5 million renovation project has already been completed. This phase focused on outdoor site work, including a bus drop lane and renovated parking lot.
The second phase that is part of a $4 million project to upgrade all energy systems in the district to wood pellet boiler systems will begin later this month, Putnam said.

It was difficult finding an institution to finance the energy project, but Johnson Control, which is conducting the energy project, has guaranteed savings from the more efficient energy systems that would exceed the costs for the 15 year loan, Putnam said.
The energy project is replacing four boilers at the high school. Two of the boilers are non-working and two are inefficient, Putnam said. The boilers are more than 100 years old and were once coal-burning before they were converted to oil burning, he said.
The new wood pellet boiler systems should be up and running by September, Putnam said.
