Derry will restrict parking on section of South Avenue

DERRY — Town councilors have voted to restrict parking on a section of South Avenue after residents complained about traffic congestion at the busy intersection with Birch Street.

Councilors voted 7-0 to approve an amendment to the parking code in a meeting last week. Parking will be prohibited for a distance of 125 feet on both sides of South Avenue from the intersection with Birch Street heading west. Parking on Birch Street will still be allowed, according to officials.

An abutter and other residents had complained in the fall to the Traffic and Safety Committee about traffic flow problems, said Public Works Director Michael Fowler. The popular Blue House Restaurant is located near the area at 21 Birch St.

Some large trucks had difficulty getting through the intersection. But the traffic snarls weren’t limited to trucks as cars were also affected, he said.

Traffic flow was impacted when people parked their cars on South Avenue to go to nearby businesses, Fowler said.

“When people park to use businesses it really reduces the space,” he said.

The committee listened to testimony and discussed the matter during two meetings before recommending approval for the parking restriction, Fowler said.

“When a car is parked at that particular throat or neck, it’s very tight for two cars to pass,” Fowler said.

The only cost the town will incur will be to install “no parking” signs, according to officials.
