GILFORD — School district teachers will be given raises in each of the next three years, but will have a reduced health care offering if the proposed teachers' contract is approved by voters.
Teachers have been working for the past two years on a contract that had no step raises, according to Scott Isabelle, assistant superintendent for business at the school district.
The current teachers' contract did include a one percent cost-of-living increase for the first year, Isabelle said.
The new three-year contract proposal from the teachers' union and the school district calls for 1.5 percent cost-of-living increases each year, and gives step increases each year as well. The proposal was agreed on by the district and the teachers' association last month.
The cost of the contract is $111,798 for the first year, $257,911 for the second year, and $260,323 for the third year of the contract, Isabelle said.
Significant reductions were made in the health care provisions of the contract, Isabelle said, for a savings of about $156,000.
Higher deductibles are specified, and dollar mail-out prescriptions have been eliminated, he said.
A large change was made in the health program offerings, he said. The last contract offered three different health plans. The new contract only offers an HMO plan.
"Under the plan, if the teachers want a (point of service) plan, they will have to buy it themselves," Isabelle said.
Residents will have a chance to discuss the bill at the school district's deliberative session on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at Gilford High School.
