Salem school officials set to air high school plan

SALEM — The School Board and administration are beginning to schedule a number of public information sessions about the proposed high school renovation project in advance of the Feb. 6 district deliberative session and the March 11 town election.

One session will take place at the high school on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. and a second is in the works for either the end of the month or the beginning of February. There will also be a number of smaller information sessions geared toward groups such as PTAs, according to Superintendent Michael Delahanty.

“I think it is important to schedule some dates where we can make presentations about the high school project,” said Delahanty.

In addition to school administrators and board members, the presentations will also include information and input from the district’s design and building partners.

A school district article asks for the appropriation of just under $75 million for the project. The state will pay for the new career and technical education center at the high school, which is nearly $11 million of the project.

The remainder of the project will be paid for through three bonds of just over $21 million each, which will be issued one per year over a three-year period.
Delahanty said most of the public presentation is ready to go, although there are some last-minute refinements to make sure the district gets the best information to the public.

“We have some critical components presently completed, now it is a matter of refining the presentation,” said Delahanty.

The administration and the building partners have been making practice presentations to small groups to get feedback.

“We want to see if there are improvements we can make,” Delahanty said.

The superintendent also said he hopes the presentations are either broadcast live on local cable or are taped for future rebroadcast.

“We are encouraging people to attend and ask questions about the project,” he said.aswift@newstote.com
