Nashua kindergarten registration set to begin

NASHUA — Registration for the next school year is approaching for some of the city’s youngest students.

The school district has made a few small changes to the kindergarten registration process to help families who are signing up children for next September.

“We’re hoping to make registration easier and more accessible for everyone,” said Assistant Superintendent Karen Crebase.

Registration forms can now be downloaded at the Nashua School District website at or picked up at the main offices of neighborhood schools from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

In addition to the forms, parents must also submit an original birth certificate with a raised seal that shows the incoming kindergartner will be 5 years old by Sept. 30, 2014. An immunization record, copy of a recent physical exam and two different utility bills or a lease or mortgage that proves residency are also needed to register.

As in the past, parents who are registering children for kindergarten at Bicentennial, Birch Hill, Broad Street, Charlotte Avenue, Main Dunstable, New Searles and Sunset Heights elementary schools will be asked whether they would like their child to attend a morning or afternoon session.

But this year, rather than having parents wait in line to see which session their child will attend, the principals at each school will hold a lottery on April 7. Each family’s preference will be honored until classes are filled to capacity.

“We’re hopeful we may not have to do a lottery,” said Crebase, who said it’s possible everyone may be able to register for the class that they choose. But if there is more demand than space, Crebase said the lottery is a way to level the playing field and give everyone a fair chance for their first choice.

Kindergarten at the city’s Title 1 elementary schools are full-day programs.

This year, the district has set aside Jan. 30 for one-day kindergarten registration Completed registration packets can be dropped off on in the office of each school. Amherst, Broad St., Dr. Crisp and Ledge Street schools will be ready for registration packets from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Children registering for kindergarten at Bicentennial, Birch Hill, Charlotte Avenue, Fairgrounds, Main Dunstable, New Searles and Sunset Heights will hold one-day registration from 4 to 6 p.m. and those signing up to attend Mt. Pleasant Elementary School can register from 6 to 8 p.m.

There will also be ongoing registration from Jan. 31 to March 31 at the main office of each school from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. However, school officials ask parents to make sure packets are complete to avoid delays with school administrators and nurses who will review forms.

To be considered for the lottery, registration packets must be dropped off by March 31.

All families who register a child for kindergarten will also receive a letter from their school principal at the end of May confirming each child’s placement.
