MANCHESTER — Celebrating New Year's Eve by setting off a Roman candle was probably fun for a couple of seconds for a Bennington man until sparks from the firework struck a Manchester police cruiser, according to police.
Police said about 9:15 p.m. on New Year's Eve, Officer Rob Megowen was driving on Elm Street, near Lowell Street, when a small sparking ball of fire struck the hood and windshield of his cruiser. Similar sparks of flames flew into two groups of pedestrians on Elm Street.
The Roman candle was set off in front of McGarvey's Pub, 1097 Elm St., and Megowen detained several people in front of the bar. He recovered the spent Roman candle on the ground next to a planter.
Police said witnesses identified Aric Pettis, 25, of 329 N. Bennington Road, as the individual who lit the firework, resulting in fiery projectiles striking the cruiser and endangering the pedestrians.
Pettis was arrested and charged with reckless conduct.
