High school coaches keeping one eye on weather

No one can ever say Bishop Guertin of Nashua head coach Gary Bishop doesn't have a passion for hockey. Despite a snowstorm predicted to dump more than a foot statewide, Bishop still hopes his team can play Trinity of Manchester FThursday at 6:10 p.m. at Skate 3 in Tyngsborough, Mass.

"I'm following the storm and hoping the majority of it heads out to the ocean," said Bishop. "I want to play this game."

Bishop said Wednesday the game is still on, but the decision will depend on the weather.

Winnacunnet of Hampton athletic director Carol Dozibrin said Wednesday that her program's ice hockey game against host Bedford today at 7:30 p.m. at St. Anselm College is still on.

"We could postpone it early (today)," said Dozibrin. "If we do postpone it, we plan on making that game up on Tuesday (Jan. 7) at 7:45 at St. Anselm."

In Hanover, Marauders head coach Dick Dodds said today's scheduled game with Concord at the Everett Arena had been moved up to a 1:30 p.m. start time. "It was scheduled for 5 p.m., but with the storm, Concord decided to move the time up," said Dodds. "It's still on as far as we know."

Hanover beat Concord 3-1 during the Bauer Christmas Classic in Manchester.

"Concord impressed me with their defense and they have one of the best forechecking teams in the state," said Dodds.

Hanover had 11 different players score at least one goal in three holiday tournament games at JFK Coliseum last week.

"We have depth and we're able to skate four lines," said Dodds. "It helps us stay fresh. We're looking forward to the Concord game. It's a rivalry game and the intensity level is always high when we meet."

Exeter head coach Jim Tufts said his team's game with Pinkerton of Derry is still scheduled for 7 p.m. today at the IceDen in Hooksett.

"Bill Ball (Exeter athletics director) told me both schools will make a final decision of whether we play by noon (today)."

Other ice hockey games slated for Thursday feature Somersworth/Coe-Brown hosting Alvirne of Hudson, Bishop Brady of Concord hosting St. Thomas Aquinas of Dover, Lebanon hosting Merrimack, and Spaulding of Rochester hosting Kingswood of Wolfeboro.

Hockey followers are asked to check with their respective school officials today to find out if their game has been postponed due to the weather.

The same is true for the other sports. Stevens High of Claremont is scheduled to host Franklin in girls' basketball. Goffstown, Oyster River of Durham, Nashua North and Nashua South are scheduled to host wrestling meets Thursday. In girls' ice hockey, Souhegan of Amherst is scheduled to host Lebanon and St. Thomas/Dover is slated to host Oyster River.

On Friday ,the high school basketball regular season resumes with 34 boys' games and 33 girls' games scheduled throughout the Granite State.
