Grim start to New Year in NH as three suffer life-threatening crash injuries
Single car accidents in Derry and Manchester left a 17-year-old youth, a 16-year old girl and a 29-year old woman with life-threatening injuries in single car crashes on New Year's Eve.
In each crash, a vehicle said to have been driven in a dangerous fashion hit an obstruction head-on by the side of the road.
In Derry, officials said a 17-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl suffered "life-threatening injuries" in a single car crash at Gulf Road and Hampshire Drive.
A car officials said was driven at a high rate of speed slammed into a tree, trapping two of its three teen-aged occupants inside.
The 17-year-old unrestrained driver, and a 16-year-old girl in the back seat suffered life-threatening injuries, fire officials said, Derry firefighters needed 10 minutes to cut away sections of the the demolished car to get the victims out. A third passenger, a 17-year-old male who was riding in the front seat with his seat belt on, suffered minor injuries and was found walking outside the wrecked car when crews arrived.
The entire shift of Derry firefighters, a complement of 15, was called to the scene to remove the crash victims from the wreckage. Once out of the car, the two seriously injured teens were attended by two paramedics and two EMTs as they were taken by ambulance to a helicopter landing zone.
The girl was taken first to Parkland Hospital in Derry and then to Tufts-New England Medical Center. The male was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital.
In Manchester, a 29-year-old Allentown woman was seriously hurt in an accident Tuesday evening at about 7:30 p.m.
A Toyota Echo driven by Christine Decker, 29, of Allenstown apparently jumped lanes on North Main Street and slammed into a utility pole, police said.
The crash happened shortly as a caller to the city's 9-1-1 emergency line reported seeing the vehicle being driven erratically through the city's West Side.
The witness described the car crossing onto the northbound lane on North Main Street and crashing into a utility pole.The Toyota sustained heavy front end damage in the wreck, which happened near Manchester High School West.
Decker was taken to Catholic Medical Center for treatment.
A passenger in Decker's vehicle, Timothy McLemore, 22, of Allenstown, was taken to Elliot hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Police said alcohol, drugs and speed are being investigated as possible contributing factors to the crash.
