Teen gets year in jail for fleeing from state trooper

NEWPORT — A North Walpole teen was given a year in jail after pleading guilty to crashing a stolen car into the Sugar River while fleeing from a state trooper last September.

Travis Hattey, 19, of North Walpole was arrested after he allegedly fled from a state trooper in a stolen 2006 Toyota Tundra in the early morning hours of Sept. 6 on Elm St. in Claremont near the intersection of Factory Street and Main Street and then crashed in to Sugar River.

He was later indicted on charges of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon and receiving stolen property.

Before crashing into the river, he allegedly ran a red light while traveling at 40 to 50 mph. His actions placed the "motoring public" as well as a passenger in the Toyota in danger of serious bodily injury, according to the indictment.
The passenger, a juvenile from Westminister, Vt., swam away from the scene in the river and was later found in Bellows Falls, Vt.

In Sullivan County Superior Court last week he pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to one year in the house of corrections on the receiving stolen charge which he is serving out. He was given a suspended one-year sentence for the other charge, pending good behavior. He is also ordered to participate in counseling and make restitution to the owners of the Toyota David and Karen Hearne of $250 as well as $18,080.79 to Progressive Insurance and $2,938.49 to the Claremont Fire Department.
