Man rescued from thin ice on Nubanusit Lake

HANCOCK — Eight agencies responded to Nubanusit Lake Saturday afternoon after a man walked out onto the thin ice.

Hancock and Greenfield police officers, along with New Hampshire Fish and Game officers, went to the lake around 1:28 p.m. for a report of a suicidal man who had walked onto the ice.

Hancock Fire and Rescue, the Swanzey Fire Department Dive Team, New Ipswich Fire Department with its boat, the Winchester Fire Department with its hovercraft and the Peterborough Fire and Ambulance also responded.

Emergency services personnel found the man on the peninsula directly across from the boat launch.

The emergency workers told him to stay where he was because of the danger of walking back across the thin ice, Hancock Police Chief Andrew Wood said Monday.

Emergency workers met him where he was on the peninsula and kept him warm until the hovercraft could be sent to him and pick him up, Wood said.

After he was brought back to the boat launch, the man was taken to Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough for treatment.

Police cleared the scene around 4:30 p.m., Wood said.
