Derry School Board finalizes budget calling for 1.37 percent cut

DERRY — The Derry Cooperative School District's proposed budget for 2014-15 represents a 1.37 percent cut in spending, according to school district officials.

Members of the School Board and the Fiscal Advisory Committee met in a series of meetings over the past several weeks to work on the budget. The final budget calling for spending $80,817,146.18, was finalized in a joint meeting of the two groups on Dec. 16.

A public hearing will be held on the budget next month and followed by consideration at a deliberative session in February.

The budget declined $1,086,544.36 from last year's approved budget of $81,903,690. The packags is $333, 645.99 less than the default budget of $81,150, 792, said Jane Simard, business manager for the school district.

Part of the proposed spending cut can be attributed to the reduction of positions due to declining enrollment, according to school officials.

Simard said two positions will be reduced at Derry Village Elementary School; two at East Derry Memorial Elementary School; one at South Range Elementary School; and one at West Running Brook Middle School.

The jobs should be reduced through attrition, she said.

"It doesn't appear at this time that any jobs will be lost," Simard said.

The final budget includes $2.5 million in food service and federal funds that are self-funded, she said.

The public hearing on the budget is for Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m. in the West Running Brook Middle School cafeteria. The deliberative Town Meeting session is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 8 at 10 a.m., also at West Running Brook.
