Bedford wrestlers top Goffstown

Andres Diaz (blk/Goff) vs Justin Mello 160 ib class, Mello by pin.

BEDFORD — Bedford continued to display its dominance on the mat with a 56-15 win over Goffstown in a Division II dual meet Wednesday.

Beford won seven matches by pin, including Ben Gilman (138), Josh Belz (145), Chris Connery (152), Justin Mello (160), Ben Miller (182), Matt Houston (220) and Robert Lamy (285).

Houston was able to pin his opponent, Glen Rogers, in 16 seconds.

Ben Dow of Bedford was unopposed in the 120-pound class.

Goffstown had no pins but won three decisions: Connor Bourque, Mitchell Cusson and Ian Routhier. Kevin Donahue was unopposed in the 106-pound class.

Donahue also fought Bedford’s Jake Hall in an exhibition between mismatched weight classes. Hall won an 8-2 decision.

Bedford’s wrestlers are now 5-0 and off to a much better start than last season, according to head coach Rob Benincasa.

“I think we’re prepared,” said Benincasa. “The Bedford wrestlers go out there in shape, ready to wrestle a six-minute match.”

The edge in fitness was apparent in the number of pins by the Bulldogs.

“When we go up against their best competition, our guys are pushing the pace. We’re not quitting. We don’t let up” said Benincasa.

Goffstown is 1-1. Coach Keith Detjin said his roster is lacking experience right now.

“Half our team is a young team” said Detjin. “When you wrestle a team with experienced wrestlers, that’s going to happen. Sometimes you get mismatches.”

While Goffstown won matches by decisions, Bedford won by pins, which earn twice the points.

“That’s the difference. I think it shows a lot of heart and determination,” said Benincasa. “We work on that. We train for it.”
