Video surveillance captured a vandal running after slashing a holiday decoration in Derry Friday.

DERRY — A video surveillance system set up by a resident has captured an individual using a knife to slash inflatable holiday lawn decorations.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Friday, Dec. 13, said David Borque, of 2 Donmac Drive. He had just recently installed a security camera system.

"At 2 a.m. it caught an individual running across the yard, slashing all of the decorations," Borque said Thursday from the house.

The six inflatables were damaged beyond repair, at a total cost of approximately $600.

"It's not an overwhelmingly large display, but it's a cute display and the kids get enjoyment out of it," Borque said. That's really why we do it — it' s for the kids. So having it cut up like it was last Friday was heartbreaking."

Police are investigating the vandalism, said Derry police Capt. Vern Thomas. A report on the incident hadn't been completed as of press time.

Borque said he had installed the security cameras after several of the decorations received minor damage in an incident Nov. 14.

Fortunately, Home Depot responded Thursday after viewing a television broadcast of the vandalism. A manager stopped by the house and dropped off some new inflatable decorations, a thankful Borque said.
