UNH's good name: Administration fights for it

University of New Hampshire's administration has done well by the university, its faculty and its students in appealing an arbitrator's ruling that ordered a fired department head reinstated.

Last year, Marco Dorfsman, chairman of the Languages, Literatures and Cultures Department, doctored student evaluations of a French lecturer. He confessed and the university fired him, but Dorfsman appealed to an arbitrator, who ruled that although his behavior was a fireable offense under his contract, he should be reinstated.

Winning an appeal of an arbitrator's ruling is a difficult thing, but the university has a strong argument that the arbitrator acted arbitrarily in vacating Dorfsman's termination. Good for the administration for seeing this fight through. It is tremendously important for the university's reputation for academic integrity.
