Maine man faces charges for alleged baseball bat beating

BRENTWOOD — A 47-year-old man is facing assault and burglary charges for allegedly breaking into a Portsmouth home and beating two people with a metal baseball bat, according to prosecutors.

Terrence Hartley, of Clinton, Maine was indicted on seven counts of first-degree assault, and single counts of burglary and drug possession for the Sept. 22 break-in.

A grand jury indicted Hartley on the charges in Rockingham County Superior Court, according to indictments.

Hartley allegedly broke into the home through a back door sometime before 1:30 a.m. and assaulted a man and a woman with the bat, and even beat a dog inside, according to police.

Indictments say that the woman was struck in the hand, left thigh and right knee during the attack. The man, who owned the home, was hit in the back, hand, ear and knee, according to prosecutors.

Hartley was not indicted for allegedly striking the dog.

Each count of first-degree assault is punishable by up to 7 ½ to 15 years in state prison.

The burglary and drug possession charges are also felonies and punishable by state prison time.

Prosecutors say that Hartley allegedly had a quantity of cocaine on him when he was arrested by police.

Portsmouth police were called to the Maple Haven neighborhood, and arrested Hartley after a brief search in the neighborhood. The two victims were treated for their injuries at Portsmouth Regional Hospital and later released.

Hartley is also a registered sex offender in Maine.

That state's sex offender web site says that Hartley is required to register for life due to his prior sexual assault convictions.

He is currently being held at the Rockingham County jail in Brentwood. He will appear for arraignment later this month in Rockingham County Superior Court.
