Looking for Abigail: Public can help find her

December 14. 2013 1:02AM

Please take a look at the picture we are running with this editorial. Readers have seen it before. It is of Abigail Hernandez, now just 15, of Conway. She vanished Oct. 9.

Last Sunday's editorial questioning the Attorney General's Office and FBI about their handling of the case, particularly as it relates to sharing information with the public, got their attention. They take issue with our saying their work seemed sloppy and self-promotional. (Abigail's mother, in an eloquent letter to the editor on this page, is also critical.)

Regarding "sloppy and self-promotional," they may have a point, and we appreciate the truly tireless work and time being expended by law enforcement.

But our larger point remains. Authorities like Associate Attorney General Jane Young and the FBI's Kieran Ramsey should review how and how much information they share with the public and explain better their approach to this particular case.

Our experience tells us that the more they can explain and share, the more the public will be able to help find Abigail, which is what all of New Hampshire wants. So take another look at that photo and keep an eye out. Joseph W. McQuaid
