College Sports Roundup: SNHU men cagers can't hold big lead against Merrimack

Sophomore guard Gelvis Solano scored a game-high 35 points to help the Merrimack College men's basketball team overcome a 12-point halftime deficit and defeat Southern New Hampshire University 78-73 Saturday afternoon in Manchester.

Rodney Saunders tossed in a team-high 21 points and was one of three SNHU players who scored in double figures. Elijah Bonsignore added 19 points and Mike Stys (Hooksett) finished with 13.

The loss dropped SNHU to 5-5 overall and 3-5 in the Northeast-10.Dartmouth 76, Jacksonville State 46: At Hanover, sophomore Alex Mitola scored a team-high 16 points for Dartmouth (4-4), which snapped a three-game losing streak.

Mitola knocked down four 3-pointers against the Gamecocks (4-8). Dartmouth junior John Golden added a season-high 14 points with six rebounds and three assists.


Colby-Sawyer 86, Lyndon State 79: At Lyndon Center, Vt., Colby-Sawyer converted nine of its 12 free throw attempts in overtime to earn this North Atlantic Conference victory.

Mike Dias had 22 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Chargers (4-4, 2-0). Teammate Wol Mong finished with 20 points.

Women's basketball

Merrimack 67, SNHU 58: At Manchester, Chloe Rothman led three Merrimack College players in double figures with 15 points as the Warriors pulled away late for a Northeast-10 victory.

Sophomore Erin Doherty led Southern New Hampshire (5-5, 3-4 NE-10) with a career-high 20 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds. SNHU junior Kaylea Griffin collected nine points and nine rebounds, and sophomore Bianca Langford finished with eight points and 16 rebounds.


Lasell College 64, Plymouth State 59: At Plymouth, Plymouth State senior Krystin Corliss (Loudon) scored a career-high 34 points - including six 3-pointers - and had a game-high six assists, but the Panthers dropped to 0-8 following this non-conference loss.

It was a 47-47 game with 6:25 to play, but Lasell used a 13-3 spurt to open up its largest lead of the game, 60-50, with two minutes remaining. The Panthers trimmed their deficit to three points with 35 seconds remaining, but Lasell made four of six free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.


Colby-Sawyer 69, Lyndon State 39: At Lyndon Center, Vt., Kelsey Bragdon had 20 points and six rebounds to highlight Colby-Sawyer's victory. Ashley Fruzzetti had 17 points three rebounds, three assists and one steal for the Chargers, who led 33-9 at halftime.

Franklin Pierce 3, SUNY Canton 1: At Winchendon, Mass., sophomore defenseman Sarah Sheils assisted on all three Franklin Pierce goals goals as the Ravens (9-1) extended their winning streak to six games. Michaela Faia, Karsyn Baker and Haylea Barbieri scored for Franklin Pierce, which received 24 saves from freshman goaltender Shannon O'Neil.
