Berlin fire crews battle blaze in vacant building in sub-zero temperatures
BERLIN - Fire crews battled a "very dangerous" fire in sub-zero temperatures that has heavily damaged the vacant Princess Theater building on Main Street, fire Lt. William Maddalena said late Friday night.
The fire was reported about 6:30 p.m. Friday and crews encountered a "heavy fire" in the large building that has been vacant at least eight years, Maddalena said.
As crews sprayed water on the building, temperatures that plunged to below zero saw the building and surrounding areas turn to ice. Maddalena said crews were continuing to battle the blaze at 11:10 p.m. Friday.
He said the building is not safe to enter and that crews have continued using an exterior attack.
"We're still actively fighting it," he said. The ice has made conditions "very dangerous."
