Man says he staged burglary for insurance

BRENTWOOD — A Milford man pleaded guilty Thursday in Rockingham County Superior Court to charges that he staged a burglary in order to collect an insurance payment.

Joshua Calaguiro was sentenced to 90 days in prison and will be placed on probation for one year, according to a release from the state Attorney General's Office.

Calaguiro falsely claimed that his home was broken into Oct. 16, 2012, and that about $11,000 in personal property was stolen, including a $7,400 diamond engagement ring, the release said. His insurer, Safety Insurance, paid his claim.

About six months later, his girlfriend, Heather Spain, reported to police that she and Calaguiro decided to separate and, while she was packing, she found a box containing items that Calaguiro had reported stolen, the release said.

Calaguiro told police that he and Spain had staged the burglary together to pay for his daughter's medical treatments, but "investigators did not find evidence to substantiate Mr. Calaguiro's claim that Ms. Spain was involved in staging the burglary," the release said.
