Water main accident forces Salem students to temporarily relocate

SALEM — An excavator working on the renovations at Fisk Elementary School hit a water main on Main Street earlier this week, causing the students to relocate to the high school for the remainder of the day.

The incident took place on Tuesday morning, and the damage was repaired and students were back in the elementary school on Wednesday, according to Superintendent Michael Delahanty.

“The water main was clearly on the plan and should have been avoided, clearly it was an error on the contractor’s part,” he said. “They have been doing a wonderful job for us, nonetheless, it was a careless mistake on the operator’s part.”

Because there was no water at Fisk, students were transferred to the high school for the remainder of the day. Delahanty praised the staff at both schools for handling the transition smoothly.

Other than the water main incident, Delahanty said he has been pleased with the progress of the renovations at Fisk and Soule elementary schools.

Due to unanticipated ledge issues at Fisk Elementary, work there remains about a month behind work at Soule, according to Delahanty. However, he said it is still too early to tell if that will impact the opening of Fisk School in August for the 2013-14 year.

Delahanty said he anticipates the construction manager will make every effort to catch up to the construction schedule, including putting on extra work crews if necessary.

Construction crews have begun putting up the steel for the new multi-purpose room at Fisk.

At Soule Elementary, much of the work on the new multi-purpose room as well as the library and elementary classroom expansion at the back of the school has been closed in, according to Delahanty.

“Hopefully, we will avoid winter issues at that school, but we are going to face some winter conditions for Fisk,” Delahanty. “But we are anticipating that the construction manager will take every opportunity to catch up at Fisk.”
