Rich won’t return to coach Londonderry football
Jon Rich will not be the head football coach at Londonderry High School next season.
Rich said he was told by school officials Tuesday that he did not have the support of the school board.
“I met with the principal (Jason Parent) and the AD (Howard Sobolov) and I was told that the school board would not support their recommendation for me as head coach for next fall,” Rich said Thursday night. “It was a complete surprise to me. I do think I had the support of the principal and the athletic director.”
Rich, a former player at Londonderry, replaced Tom Sawyer as the school’s head coach in 2008. He guided the Lancers to two playoff appearances: 2008 and 2013.
Londonderry finished with a 4-6 record last season following a loss to Pinkerton in the Division I South championship game.
Rich, who is a health and physical education teacher at Londonderry High, said he met with his players Thursday.
“A lot of kids were upset,” he said. “It was a tough meeting to have.
“I’d like to say thank you to the kids and the coaching staff I worked with. A lot of people put in a lot of hours.”
