Police ready to make a wardrobe change

LONDONDERRY — Starting this winter, it will no longer be entirely accurate to refer to Londonderry police officers as "the boys (and girls) in blue."

Members of the local police force will soon be sporting some stylish and more modern new duds while patrolling the town.

Police on detail at the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport started the trend, according to Police Lt. Tim Jones, who said the airport officers began wearing the new khaki pants and black shirt combination earlier this month.

With those on airport duty giving the new uniforms a positive review, the decision was ultimately made to extend the option to the entire force. Londonderry's Police Department has more than 60 staff members including sergeants, detectives, school resource officers and patrol officers.

Jones said plans for the uniform changes have been in the works for a while now.

"We've been looking towards a more utilitarian look," he said. "For starters, the new uniforms have more pockets. They're easier to move around in."

As it stands now, the plan is to make the new uniform available to the entire Londonderry police force by mid-February.

Police Chief Bill Hart said that in the months leading up to the transition, he's hoping to publicize the changes so residents won't be alarmed or confused by the police force's new look.

"A police uniform is universally recognizable and with good reason," Hart said. "And when residents need help, it's important they know who to look for."

"So we're spreading the word," he added.

Further details on the new uniforms will be posted on the department's Facebook page.
