Fire damages interior of home on Bypass 28 in Derry

DERRY — A fire displaced five people from their home at 86 Bypass 28 Wednesday night, according to fire officials.

No injuries were reported in the fire that damaged the interior of the split level ranch home, according to the Derry Fire department.

A resident reported the fire after coming home at around 5:30 p.m. He noticed heavy smoke in the house and called 911, according to the fire department.

The first arriving engine reported the fire at 5:37 p.m.

Firefighters first searched the building to ensure that all residents and pets had made it out safely. They then moved quickly to knock down the fire.

Next-door neighbor Sylvia Sharples was home with her husband, Terry, at the time of the fire. She said she went over to see if the family needed any help.

She and her husband saw plumes of smoke pouring from the house.

“It was just smoke; we didn’t see any flames,” Sylvia Sharples said.

Terry Sharples said windows were cracked throughout the house.

“It was coming out of the front and back,” he said. “You could see there was a lot of damage done.”

The family’s name is Smith, Silvia Sharples said. They have lived in the house for a number of years.

Forced out of their home by the fire, they are staying with friends, she said.

The cause of the fire is not considered suspicious, but is being investigated by the Derry Fire Prevention Bureau.

There was fire damage to the first floor kitchen and living room. Smoke and heat damage was found throughout the structure, according to fire officials.

The Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the two adults and three children displaced by the fire.
