Greenfield planners seek input on Heritage District plan proposal

GREENFIELD — Planning board members looking to preserve the heart of the town’s village are proposing the creation of a Neighborhood Heritage District.

The board plans to hold a community meeting Saturday to garner feedback on the idea.

The meeting will start at 9 a.m. at Stephenson Memorial Library and is expected to last about two hours.

This will be the first time the public will see the proposed ordinance, which after feedback from the public will be tweaked and finalized for a March Town Meeting vote, said Planning Board Chairman Robert Marshall on Thursday.

“We’ve had a number of community conversations on the issues going as far back as April 2012 about the need to protect the historic nature of the village,” Marshall said.

The community consensus has been that creating a Historic District would be too restrictive, Marshall said. “A Historic District is much more strict. This is much more recommendation and advisory.”

In February, the town received a community planning grant from New Hampshire Housing to draft the proposed ordinance.

Consultants hired with the grant funds drafted the original proposed ordinance in October, which was then recrafted by the Neighborhood District Advisory Committee and the Planning Board.
