Hillside Middle School is state winner in Samsung science contest

MANCHESTER — Hillside Middle School is the state winner in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest to promote science, technology, engineering and math in the classroom.

The school community is now producing a public service announcement video detailing the ecological health of the Merrimack River where the school traditionally releases salmon, Hillside language arts teacher Sue Hannan said Wednesday. The video will be the school's submission for Samsung's national contest.

"It's very exciting. Everybody at school is on board and willing to help out however they can," Hannan said.

"It's a project for everybody," she said, noting the school's band and chorus are developing background music and a song for the video, art students are preparing art work, and the woodshop teacher will talk about engineering dams and bridges.

As a state winner, Hillside already received two Samsung tablets plus a digital video camera, laptop and software to produce the video. They also won $20,000 in technology products.

Hannan said she applied for the contest in October. She had to describe how the community would benefit from promoting interest in science, technology, engineering and math, commonly known as STEM.

Samsung Electronics North America executive vice-president David Steel congratulated the winners from the 50 states and District of Columbia.

"Not only are we excited to see these projects come to life but also how these young people will use STEM after this context to improve their own futures as well as the wider world," he said in a statement.
