Claremont police identify suspect in three armed robberies

CLAREMONT — Claremont police said Wednesday they have identified the suspect who allegedly committed three armed robberies in the Upper Valley area over the past two months.

James M. Oberfeldt, 30, of Claremont, is being held in Massachusetts on drug charges after he was arrested by Massachusetts State Police in Holyoke, Mass., Saturday.

Because Sullivan County has a warrant issued for Oberfeldt for a probation violation, state police contacted the Sullivan County's Sheriff Department to notify the department of his arrest, who in turn notified Claremont police.

After working with state police, Claremont police was able to "positively identify Oberfeldt as the suspect," Claremont police said Wednesday.

He is expected to be formally charged with the three Upper Valley robberies in the near future. The robberies include the Oct. 11 armed robbery of the One Credit Union on Charlestown Road in Claremont; the Nov. 20 armed robbery of the Lake Sunapee Bank on Hanover Street in Lebanon; and the Nov. 26 armed robbery of the Claremont Savings Bank on Maple Avenue in Claremont.

"The Claremont Police Department was able to confirm that the firearm brandished during the above listed robberies was a Daisy Air-soft BB gun, Beretta 9 mm replica and not a real firearm," police said in a release.

Oberfeldt is being held on cash bail in Massachusetts for the drug charges and $5,000 cash bail for the Sullivan County probation violation warrant.
