Wakefield woman helps track alleged burglars

WAKEFIELD — A local woman who surprised a man who allegedly burglarized her house helped police track him and the getaway driver down when she followed the duo as they drove away.

According to Wakefield Police Department Lt. Mark O’Brien, the resident returned home about 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday when she found a man inside going through her things.

She apparently startled the man who then left on foot carrying a backpack. The victim called 911 and then followed the suspect as he got into a car driven by another man; she alerted police to the vehicle description and direction of travel.

The victim told dispatchers that a gun safe was opened and that she believed a gun was stolen. A bulletin went out to Strafford County dispatch as the men were headed south towards Milton and Rochester.

Shortly thereafter, Milton Police officers stopped the suspect’s car on Route 125 in Milton. Police found a backpack that had been thrown from the car on the side of the road a short distance from where the car was stopped. The backpack contained numerous items believed stolen from the home, including a loaded pistol.

Police arrested Jerry B. Davis, of Milton, and charged him with burglary, theft of a firearm, felon in possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of controlled/narcotic drug; also arrested was William Gipson, 30, of Rochester, who was charged with criminal liability for conduct of another — burglary; and criminal liability for conduct of another — theft of a firearm. Gipson was held at Carroll County Jail on $15,000 cash bail and Davis was held on $25,000 cash bail.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Milton Police Department, New Hampshire State Police Troop A, and the New Hampshire Fish and Game K-9 Unit assisted in this investigation. Anyone with information should contact the Wakefield Police Department at 522-3232 or Carroll County Sheriff’s Office at 539-2284.
