Hannah Comeau tallied 15 points including the game-winning basket with 2:10 to play to lift Derryfield School of Manchester to a season-opening 29-28 Division IV girls' basketball home victory over Newmarket Tuesday.
Derryfield never trailed in the game, leading 17-7 at halftime and 21-14 after three quarters. Comeau drove the baseline to give Derryfield a 29-24 lead, but Newmarket behind Tasha Jarosz (eight points), Maddie Teague (six) and Katrina Holmes (six) closed the gap to one with 45 seconds to play.
"Newmarket had three more possessions in the final 45 seconds. We held them to one shot twice and they didn't get off a final shot in the final five seconds," said Derryfield coach Ed Lemire. "We had chances to widen our lead, but we went 0-for-6 from the free throw line for the game including three misses in the last quarter. We still won a huge game against an aggressive team which boxes out extremely well." Newmarket defeated Derryfield twice last year.
Hannah Menakaya scored eight points and had 12 rebounds for the Cougars.
Bow 52, Sanborn 14: The defending state champion Falcons (1-1) captured their first win Tuesday. Freshman Taylor Darrell paced the Falcons with 10 points and six steals. Senior Ashlie Tucker had a solid game with nine points, three steals and three assists. Last Friday, Bow lost its opener to Bishop Brady of Concord, 39-34. Lulka had 17 points and 10 rebounds in that game.
