Wanted Vermont man evading capture allegedly tried to run over officer
ROCHESTER - A Vermont man wanted on felony charges in that state will face more charges after allegedly attempting to drive over an officer and speeding around the city while evading capture, according to police Capt. Paul Toussaint..Reuben Adams, 36 - who has been hiding since an incident in Vermont - was wanted there for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, attempting to evade capture, negligent operation and possession of heroin...On July 12, a warrant was issued after Adams allegedly dragged a Vermont police officer - who was attempting to arrest him - down the road in his vehicle before being involved in a “second reckless high-speed pursuit,” according to a release by the U.S. Attorney's Office - District of New Hampshire...On Wednesday, after receiving a request from members of N.H. Probation and Parole at 10:41 a.m., Rochester police officers and Strafford County Sheriff deputies responded to 43 Bridge St. - the home of John McKenna, 43, Toussaint said...While they were preparing to approach the home, Adams allegedly got into a vehicle and “almost ran over one of the officers in the driveway,” Toussaint said.
Toussaint said Adams drove down the wrong way of Union Street before heading north along Wakefield Street - Route 125 - which becomes Milton Road. As a precaution, Toussaint added, police decided to stop pursuing Adams, who was allegedly driving at high speeds to evade capture. “We had estimates that he was going over 100 miles per hour,” Toussaint said...Toussaint said police continued to search for Adams, who crashed his vehicle into a curb at the 'Lil Mart along Milton Road. Toussaint said the impact destroyed the front right tire.
“He got out of the vehicle and fled on foot,” Toussaint said...After learning about the accident, Toussaint said, area police established a perimeter around the residential area and evacuated a few residents.
Toussaint said departments from the area responded to assist local officers, including police from Barrington, Farmington, Middleton, Milton and New Durham, members of N.H. State Police, K-9 teams, N.H. Probation and Parole and the Strafford County Sheriff's Department. He added that Maine State Police responded, but remained on the other side of the state line as a precaution...Police followed Adams' footprints, Toussaint said, and the man was located and captured at 12:10 p.m. in a garage behind 160 Milton Road, where police said he was hiding in the rafters.
As a result of the warrant from Vermont and his alleged actions Wednesday, Toussaint said, Adams will be held to face the charges from the incidents in New Hampshire and in Vermont...Adams is being held without bail in Strafford County Jail in Dover. “Pending the resolution of the several local charges, Adams will eventually return to Vermont to face the other very serious charges in that case,” according to the release...Also, McKenna, who was out on parole in connection with an unrelated sentence and conviction for burglary and theft, is being held at Strafford County Jail pending a parole hearing and return to the N.H. State Prison in Concord, according to the release...“We don't believe that a gun was involved,” Toussaint said, adding that nonetheless police are searching as a precaution.
