Spaulding Turnpike exact-change lanes to be removed by Friday

DOVER — Exact change lanes on the Spaulding Turnpike and the infamous curved coin baskets associated with them will soon be one for the history books.

On Monday, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation announced the planned removal of the lanes at the Dover and Rochester toll plazas on the Spaulding Turnpike due to the increasing growth of E-Z Pass traffic and the underuse of the automatic coin machine lanes.

The changeover of equipment will begin Wednesday at both plazas and will involve removal of the coin baskets and automatic coin machine and the addition of new equipment. The changeover and opening of the lanes is scheduled to be complete by Friday.

All dedicated "E-ZPass Only" lanes will be located to the left of the toll plazas with "Cash/E-ZPass" lanes with toll attendants to the right, allowing the plazas to operate two dedicated E-ZPass-only lanes in each direction.

Advance overhead signs and toll plaza signs will be changed Wednesday night, and electronic message boards will be used in advance of the plazas to inform motorists of the change in layout.
