Claremont seeks alternatives to demolishing Stevens High School stage

CLAREMONT — A plea from Stevens High School students made at the Wednesday school board meeting to preserve the high school’s auditorium stage has stayed demolition for now.

The demolition is part of the planned $12.6 million renovation of the high school.

In a statement following the meeting, the Stevens High School Renovation Committee said, “The theater program at Stevens has enjoyed a long history and is a valued part of the curriculum. The committee will research auditorium and stage options to the best possible end result.”
Options include asking project architects to research possibilities to preserve the current stage by first appealing to the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office.

“Demolition of the current stage is on hold pending review of available options and the report from the State Fire Marshall and architect,” the committee said. “If it is determined that the current stage can be preserved, or if a new, similar stage will be built, either option will require additional modification from what is there today for fire safety and ADA accessibility.”
The committee said the Claremont School Board would make the final decision after reviewing the report from the Renovation Committee, architects, Fire Marshal’s Office and any comments from the public at subsequent school board meetings.
